Destination Crenshaw
City & County of Los Angeles, District Eight
“Destination Crenshaw is a 1.3-mile long outdoor art and culture experience celebrating Black Los Angeles. This community-inspired project will use the iconic Crenshaw Boulevard as a canvas and anchor for public art and streetscape design. Destination Crenshaw will be built for, by, and in honor of the local community, and will celebrate the historical and contemporary contributions of Black L.A.”
Interpretive Placemaking in Public Spaces
The interpretive design team collaborated with Perkins + Will Architects and Studio MLA Landscape Architects in crafting a network of activity nodes along the art corridor, places for the public to either informally pause and linger or gather in more formal activities. These activity nodes served as locations where aspects of the historic narrative were revealed. This unfolding narrative was based upon a thematic framework, developed by the interpretive team, that linked the physical context of the streetscape to the cultural history of Black LA. A series of digital installations were proposed to help activate these nodes by interactively engaging the public.
